Have you ever had any surf lessons? Any plans to take it up again in the not-too-distant future?
My first ever surfing experience was a private lesson for me and my other half Jo (another SkunkWorker!) with Richie Fitzgerald in Bundoran, arranged by Ricky. We didn’t realise until after the lesson just what a surfing legend he is! I managed to stand on my first 2 attempts then unfortunately couldn’t get to my feet for the rest of the lesson, his excitement at my natural talent diminished quickly..! I have tried a few times since with not much more success, but it’s always great fun regardless. I have tried paddle boarding a few times and love it.

Please give us a quick intro Sam…. What did you do before joining SkunkWorks Surf Co.?
After finishing my degree in Glasgow, Scotland, I started my working life in pharmacy and worked for a few years as a locum pharmacist in community pharmacies across Scotland, the Isle of Man and Ireland. It never really suited me and I decided to make a career change, starting with an AAT Accounting Technician course. With this I moved home to Northern Ireland and landed my first accounts role working as part of the accounts team at the Irish Football Association. This was such a different world to what I was used to, and a welcome one! I got loads of great experience that was to set me up perfectly for my future role at SkunkWorks Surf Co. I’ve been friends with Ricky and Chris since Ricky and I were at uni together, and had been following their SkunkWorks Surf Co. journey ever since they started out. After a year of working at the IFA Ricky approached me about the job at SkunkWorks Surf Co. and I jumped at the chance. I couldn’t wait to join such an exciting venture with a group of like-minded people, and have an excuse to live on the beautiful north coast of Northern Ireland, I’ve loved every minute!

What are the main differences between this job and previous roles?

The main difference is that my job now is so varied, I am mostly office-based but no 2 days are really ever the same. My role covers a large range of tasks and responsibilities, which can mean a bit of a juggling act at times, but that keeps it interesting and I love being able to prioritise my own workload. Working in a start up is really exciting, we all get on really well and it’s a lovely relaxed atmosphere, but at the same time we all work really hard towards a common goal. It amazes me sometimes just how much is going on in so many different areas of the business.

What are your ambitions in life/work?
My ambitions in both are simple…to be happy, which I’m lucky enough to say at the minute is the case in both. Happiness in work means working hard at something I enjoy, both of which are fulfilled by my current job. However I am also excited to keep studying and growing with the company. In life I am looking forward to starting a family and continuing to settle in to life beside the sea.

What do you do to unwind?
Walk on the beach, do some yoga, catch up with friends or just watch some trashy TV.

If you were given a blank cheque for a holiday where would you go and who would you take?
I’d take Jo somewhere with awesome beaches, sunshine & cocktails. I’ve always wanted to go to Thailand, or maybe Bali or Hawaii..somewhere with a perfect mix of relaxation, fun activities and a wee party or two.
